Scheler defines love as a spiritual movement towards the highest possible value of the loved person, a spiritual act in which this highest value – which he calls the ‘salvation’ of a person – is apprehended. Spranger makes a similar comment: that love perceives the value potentialities in the beloved person. Von Hattingberg expresses it differently: love sees a person the way God ‘meant’ him. Love, we may say, reveals to us the valuational image of a human being. In so doing, it performs a metaphysical act. For the valuational image revealed to us in the course of the spiritual act of love is essentially the ‘image’ of something invisible, unreal – unrealized. In the spiritual act of love we apprehend a person not only as what he ‘is’ in his uniqueness and singularity, his haecceitas in the Schoolmen’s terminology, but also as what he can and will be: his entelechy. Let us call to mind the definition of human reality as a possibility – the possibility of realizing values, of self-realization. What love sees is therefore no more and no less than this ‘possibility’ of a human being. We may remark parenthetically that psychotherapy also must aim to see the human beings with whom it deals in their own most personal possibilities, to anticipate the potential values in them. It is part of the metaphysical mystery of the spiritual act we call love that out of the beloved’s essential image it succeeds in reading the potential image. For to discover potential values on the basis of essential facts is not a matter of calculation. Facts can be calculated; potentialities are by their nature incalculable.
